Can a Memphis family choose assisted living in DeSoto County, Mississippi?
Yes, but the move takes the parent out of Tennessee's system: Mississippi's State Department of Health licenses care settings in DeSoto County (Southaven, Olive Branch, Horn Lake, Hernando), and Tennessee's Health Facilities Commission rules, records and complaint line do not apply there.
Mississippi uses its own license categories; its personal care home licenses cover what Tennesseans call assisted living. Check any Mississippi facility through Mississippi's health department, not through Tennessee's listings. Our directory covers only Tennessee-licensed facilities.
What happens to TennCare CHOICES if a parent moves to Mississippi?
TennCare CHOICES ends, because TennCare covers Tennessee residents; a parent who moves to DeSoto County would need to qualify for Mississippi Medicaid, which runs its own waiver programs, including an Assisted Living waiver, under Mississippi's rules.
Eligibility rules, waiting lists and participating facilities differ. Do not let a parent's Tennessee coverage lapse before Mississippi coverage is confirmed. Medicare, Medicare Advantage networks and VA benefits are federal or plan-based, but check that doctors and plans work across the line.
Which local agencies stop at the Tennessee line?
The Aging Commission of the Mid-South, the MIFA-run long-term care ombudsman district, Tennessee Adult Protective Services and the Health Facilities Commission all serve the Tennessee side only; DeSoto County residents are served by Mississippi's agencies.
That matters most when something goes wrong, because complaints and abuse reports go to the state where the facility is. Keep both states' numbers handy during a search that spans the line.
Why do Memphis families look at DeSoto County at all?
Usually because a son or daughter lives in Southaven, Olive Branch, Horn Lake or Hernando and wants a parent close by, which is a good reason; distance from the people who visit matters a great deal in senior care.
If the parent stays in Tennessee, the Shelby County options closest to the state line are in Whitehaven, South Memphis, Southeast Memphis and Collierville. Our Memphis area pages list every licensed facility in each part of the city.
What should we compare if we look on both sides of the state line?
Compare each state's licensing category and inspection records, whether the facility accepts that state's Medicaid program, the distance from the family members who will visit, and which hospitals and doctors your parent will use.
Use Mississippi's own health department records for DeSoto County facilities and Tennessee's Health Facilities Commission records for Shelby County facilities; neither state's records include the other's buildings.
