What is the difference between short-term rehab and long-term care in a Memphis nursing home?
Short-term rehab is skilled nursing and therapy after a hospital stay, aimed at going home and usually paid by Medicare Part A or a Medicare Advantage plan; long-term care is ongoing custodial and nursing care for someone who cannot safely return home, paid privately or by TennCare CHOICES Group 1.
Many Memphis-area nursing homes market themselves as “post acute” or “health and rehabilitation” and serve both groups. Ask which unit your parent would be on, how many therapy minutes a day are typical, and whether long-term residents and short-stay patients share rooms.
Is an inpatient rehab hospital different from a nursing home rehab unit?
Yes. Inpatient rehabilitation hospitals provide more intensive therapy under hospital licensing; HFC's October 2026 hospital report lists Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Memphis (80 rehab beds), Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of North Memphis (50) and Baptist Memorial Rehabilitation Hospital in Germantown (64).
Patients generally must be able to tolerate several hours of therapy a day to qualify. Long-term acute care hospitals such as Select Specialty Hospital-Memphis and Select Specialty Hospital-Memphis East serve patients who need prolonged hospital-level care, such as ventilator weaning. The hospital's discharge planner recommends a level; families can ask why one was chosen over another.
What happens when Medicare rehab coverage ends?
Coverage ends when the patient no longer needs daily skilled care or after 100 days, whichever comes first; from that day the resident pays privately unless TennCare CHOICES Group 1 coverage is in place.
Start the TennCare application during the rehab stay if a long-term stay looks likely. Ask the nursing home whether it has a TennCare-certified long-term bed available, and get any notice of non-coverage in writing; Medicare beneficiaries have appeal rights when coverage is ending.
How do we compare nursing homes for a rehab stay in Memphis?
Look at CMS's short-stay quality measures and overall rating, the facility's therapy staffing, and how often short-stay patients return to the hospital, then ask how many therapy sessions a day patients typically receive.
Each Memphis-area nursing home page on this site shows CMS ratings, staffing hours and turnover against the local median. Proximity to the family members who will visit and help with the transition home matters too.
